If there were a way to wave a magic wand and make one of the single biggest issues we face simply go away then it would have to be the challenge we all face in getting ourselves to do the things we just don’t want to do.
Every one of us faces issues or challenges that can make it so hard to just push through and do what we need to do. Why do some people find it seemingly easy to go out for that run, cook that healthy meal or finish that project when the rest of humanity seems committed to eating the next tub of ice cream or watching another load of online videos?
The first major breakthrough in beginning to do what you really don’t want to do is simply to begin getting a clear sense of what it actually is. Most people have some kind of vague sense of something they think they want to achieve or something they should be doing. They never seem to give themself the gift of the time required to actually slow down and make this ‘vague idea something more ‘concrete’. Every day of my life begins with some time set aside to remind myself of what I am actually trying to do. It seems obvious. It’s not. If it were obvious then everyone would be doing it. They’re not.
So, my friend. Step one is simply for you to get clear on what really matters. Step two is to try and set up your environment in ways that actually serve you. If you surround yourself with candy and endless TV options then there is a very good chance that when the pressure is on to get something done you will have already constructed a load of ways in which you can become easily distracted. Setting up your environment in positive ways can include making appointments with friends to meet for that run or choosing a great podcast or audiobook to motivate you for that next walk or gym session. In essence, I am simply saying that all you need to do in life is try and give yourself as many creative ways as possible to win the game. Set things up so you can win instead of allowing the environment to dictate to you the way things are going to be.
A final thought is to be very clear on all the ways we can easily self-sabotage. There are so many ways in which we can easily set up situations in our own lives in which it is so easy for things to come crashing down. What are your weak points? Where do easily tend to give in to temptation? What do you need to remove from your environment to give yourself every possible chance of success?
